New Student Scholarships

The scholarship process begins in January of each year for the new academic year. Each student winning a scholarship award will be presented at the School of Nursing Convocation held at the beginning of each fall term. If you have questions, please contact April Bruce at brucea@pitt.edu.

Margaret M. Dick-Quasi Endowed Scholarship

Resources for incoming freshman. Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by May 1 of each academic year. Click here for an application.

William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund for Undergraduate Students

Resource fund for current undergraduate students in good academic standing or incoming freshman eligible to take course work at the Honors College. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by May 1 of each academic year. Click here for an application.

Lt. Ann Visnovsky-Minor – Class of ’48 Nursing Scholarship Fund

This scholarship will be awarded at the beginning of fall term to an undergraduate incoming freshmen or current students with the status of sophomore or junior during the fall term.

Criteria Basis:

  • Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
  • Dependents of enlisted career military members (who have served at least 12 years of active duty) or dependents of any military member who lost his/her life while in the line of duty.
  • Recipients of three or four year ROTC scholarships for nursing from any branch of military service.
  • Military veterans with at least four years of active duty service and who were separated from service with an honorable discharge.
  • Dependents of active duty military or veterans with less than 12 years of military service.
  • Recipients of one or two year ROTC scholarships for nursing from any branch of military service.
  • Individuals who are from the Winder area of Pennsylvania (residents for a minimum of 10 years with a Winder mailing address) or any past/current recipient of the Fund award(s) meeting GPA guidelines who do not fall in any of the above groups.
  • Individuals who are from the Johnstown area of Pennsylvania (residents for a minimum of 10 years with a Johnstown mailing address).
  • Demonstration of commitment to national and community service and extenuating circumstances (including financial need, family tragedy, etc.)
  • Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by May 1 of each academic year. Click here for an application.

Anne J. Pierce Endowed Fund for Student Resources

Resource funds for books, lab fees, travel, tuition or other educational expenses. Recipient is to be an incoming minority freshman (including male nursing students) or transfer student with financial needs. Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by May 1 of each academic year. Click here for an application.

Kathryn C. & John W. Conway Endowed Student Nursing Award

Resource funding for current sophomore and junior students in the School of Nursing. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to apply. Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by March 15 of each academic year. Click here for an application.

Elaine F. Hagerty Memorial Nursing Student Resources Fund

Resource fund for current sophomore and juniors in the School of Nursing. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to apply. Candidates with a strong interest in becoming a medical/surgical nurse or residents of Sequential, OH will be given preference. Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by March 15 of each academic year. Click here for an application.

William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund for Undergraduate Students

These resources address the nursing shortage by attracting diverse, highly qualified candidates to enter the nursing profession and to promote study in other areas to enhance the educational experience and contribute to diversity in the profession of nursing. Ladies Hospital Aid Society Endowed Fund for Student Resources

Resource funds for senior students with the intention to pursue a career involving woman’s health care issues after graduation. All candidates shall have completed their junior year and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by March 15 of each academic year. Deborah Elaine Lawhorn Memorial Fund

Resource funds for minority and economically disadvantaged students. All candidates shall have successfully completed their first year of undergraduate studies with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Preference shall be given to students who have financial need and are eligible to receive matching funds from NEED (Negro Educational Emergency Drive) and for students who intend to pursue a career in oncology nursing after graduation. Rebecca Olive McKinney Endowed Fund

Resource fund for books, lab fees, travel, or other educational expenses. All candidates must be a current freshman, sophomore, or junior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Frank and Anna Minno Scholarship Fund in Memory of their daughter Lt. Col. Julia Minno, BSN ’49, M. Litt ‘53

Resource fund for all incoming students and current undergraduate students in the School of Nursing. All candidates shall be residents of the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Blair, Butler, Cambria, Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Erie, Fayette, Forest, Fulton, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, McKean, Mercer, Somerset, Venango, Warren, and Westmoreland counties. Preference shall be given to graduates of Conemaugh Valley High School or Cambria County residents. Students currently enrolled must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Pirates Alumni Scholarship Fund for African-American Student Support

Scholarship to African-American students in the School of Nursing who meet the following criteria: a full-time nursing student in the freshman, sophomore or junior year of study. Ann M. J. Reed Memorial Scholarship

Tony and Mildred Sherry Savino Memorial Student Resource Fund

Resource funds for current full-time undergraduate students with a GPA of 2.75 or greater. All candidates shall have graduated from one of the following PA public school districts: Altoona area, State College area or Hollidaysburg area in Blair and Center counties. All candidates shall demonstrate active community service and/or professional involvement. Stella Yaksich Endowed Scholarship

Candidate must be a junior in the School of Nursing with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above. Must also exhibit leadership in the School of Nursing, on campus, in the community, or elsewhere. Dr. Ann Gera Yurick Memorial Fund

Resource fund to support nursing students interested in geriatric nursing. Candidates must be a current sophomore or junior nursing student interested in becoming a geriatric nurse. Students currently enrolled must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Selection is for the fall term only and is due in the Student Services Office by March 15 of each academic year. Nursing Alumni Society Student Scholarships

The Nursing Alumni Society awards the following student scholarships annually at its Alumni Day event in the Spring. For more information regarding the following scholarships, please contact Joan Nock at the Nursing Alumni Office at 412-624-2404 or at jno100@pitt.edu.

The Nursing Alumni Senior Student Award

This $500 award recognizes a senior nursing student’s excellence in scholastic, professional and personal achievement. Award criteria:

  1. Applicant must have at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA
  2. Complete an application form (available in the Alumni Office, Room 217)
  3. Secure two letters of recommendation from nursing faculty
  4. Submit a 300-500 word essay describing an accomplishment that best illustrates student strengths and how student plans to contribute to the nursing profession

The Nursing Alumni Society RN-BSN Student Award

Established in 2002, the $500 award recognizes an RN-BSN student’s excellence in scholastic, professional and personal achievement. Award criteria:

  1. Applicant must have earned 20 or more credits toward a BSN degree and have a cumulative 3.5 GPA
  2. Complete an application form (available in the Alumni Office, Room 217)
  3. Secure two letters of recommendation from nursing faculty
  4. Submit a 300-500 word essay describing how you, as a professional nurse, have made a difference in a patient’s life and/or the nursing profession

The African American Nursing Alumni Scholarship

This award provides a cash award for a qualified student who has attained sufficient academic standing. Award criteria:

  1. Applicant must be a full-time generic student who will be a junior or senior in the next academic year at the University of Pittsburgh-School of Nursing and have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  2. Provide evidence of financial need
  3. Demonstrates a commitment to nursing and motivation to become a leader in the profession
  4. Unanimously chosen following a personal interview by the Selection Committee
